Ginseng is a perennial plant, about 0.6m tall. Roots grow into large tubers.
Leaves are circular, with long petioles, compound leaves consisting of many leaflets growing in the shape of a propeller. If the plant is only 1 year old (that is, 2 years after sowing) it will only have 1 leaf with 3 leaflets. If the Ginseng plant is 2 years old, it will only have 1 leaf with 5 leaflets. 3-year ginseng plants have 2 compound leaves, 4-year ginseng plants have 3 compound leaves, 5-year-old ginseng plants have 4 to 5 compound leaves. All have 5 leaflets (especially possibly 6) ovate, with deeply serrated margins. Starting from the 3rd year onwards, the new Ginseng plant flowers and bears fruit.
